About 38 Million people, in the U.S. alone, suffer from migraines; That is nearly one in ten Americans!  Whether you, or someone you know, is a migraine sufferer it is crucial to notice the warning signs, as early as possible, of the onset of a migraine. Migraines can be debilitating and can cause work and life disruptions.  Know the warning signs, take precautionary measures, and prevent a migraine before it even starts!

Four Stages of a Migraine

STAGE 1: The Prodrome

Starting one or two days before the migraine and lasting until the migraine starts, you may feel some, or all, of these symptoms.

Most common Prodrome symptoms

  • Light Sensitivity
  • Sound Sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Aura
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling of Depression or Anxiety

 STAGE 2: The Aura

Typically noticed prior to the onset of the Migraine Attack, Auras can include: flashes of light, blurriness, distorted shapes, blind spots, fireworks or sparks, colors, zig zag lines, or a moving target - lines or circles.

  • Auras do not happen to all that experience migraines.
  • Auras are not always accompanied with pain.
  • Auras may be the first noticeable symptoms that a Migraine Attack is on its way.

STAGE 3: The Migraine Attack

Lasting 72 hours, or more, the symptoms during a Migraine Attack can include (not limited to): Pain (usually located on one side of your head), sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sounds, sensitivity to smells, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excess urination, blurred vision, numbness, and slowed comprehension.

STAGE 4:  The Postdrome

After the Migraine Attack, you may feel: drained, fatigued, “brain fog”, and even memory loss.
