Famous Migraineurs

Seldom do we hear about people in the spotlight suffering from migraines but many are—and they take time off to heal. For example, “Gary Kubiak won't coach Broncos Thursday, expected back Monday” say ESPN. While migraine is not seen as something that would affect our everyday life, when it comes to well-known famous people, it is obvious that migraine is something serious and different.

If the NFL gives the Denver Broncos coach, Gary Kubiak, a week off due to his complex migraine condition, should the world of “every day” migraineurs also not be getting a week off for their migraines? We hope that he will get better soon and that he helps to pass on the information that migraines are not headaches and indeed, they are debilitating.

It is estimated that over 15% of the people (in the US) suffer from migraines. The famous aren’t exempt from suffering from them either. Here’s a list of a few famous people who suffer (or suffered) from migraines:

  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Claude Monet
  • Elvis Presley
  • Serena Williams
  • Dwayne Wade
  • Janet Jackson
  • Gary Kubiak
  • Serena Branson
  • Cindy McCain
  • Troy Aikman
  • Marcia Gross
  • Lisa Kudrow
  • Ben Affleck
  • Kristin Chenoweth
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
  • Michele Bachmann
  • Loretta Lynn
  • Carly Simon
  • Jeff Tweedy

These are just a few famous people who have/had migraines. Serena Williams, launched a campaign for menstrual migraines in 2005, in which she encouraged women suffering from migraine attacks to speak to their primary physicians. Speaking about migraines is important so we can learn from each other.
