In practical terms, collagen is what keeps skin firm and elastic, joints cushioned and mobile, bones dense, and gut lining intact. It is also the protein that naturally declines with age, production begins dropping in the mid-20s and accelerates significantly after menopause in women.¹ As levels fall, the effects show up across multiple body systems simultaneously: wrinkles, joint stiffness, bone loss, slower wound healing, and digestive changes.

Collagen cannot be absorbed in its whole, unbroken form. It must be broken down into smaller fragments, peptides, and amino acids, that can pass through the intestinal wall and reach the tissues that need them. This is why the form of collagen you choose matters considerably.
Hydrolyzed collagen (collagen peptides) is the most bioavailable supplemental form, sold as collagen peptides, multi collagen peptides, or collagen protein powder, is the most bioavailable supplemental form. Hydrolysis breaks the protein down into short amino acid chains small enough to be absorbed efficiently. It dissolves completely in water or coffee and is the form with the strongest clinical evidence behind it.
Collagen powder vs. pills: both collagen protein powder and capsule formats can deliver hydrolyzed peptides, but collagen powder allows for higher, more flexible dosing and dissolves cleanly in any liquid. Pills are convenient for travel but typically contain lower doses and may contain additional excipients worth checking.
The four clinically supported peptide forms with the most human trial evidence are VERISOL® (skin, hair, nails), FORTIGEL® (joint cartilage), UC-II® (undenatured Type II collagen for joint flexibility), and FORTIBONE® (bone density). Timing and pairing matter as much as choosing the right form. Here is the protocol that supports maximum absorption:
1. Take it on an empty stomach
Collagen is best absorbed before eating. Dissolve collagen powder in water or coffee and drink it before your first meal. Taking it alongside food, particularly protein-rich foods, introduces competition for absorption pathways that can reduce how much actually reaches the target tissues.
2. Pair it with vitamin C
Vitamin C is an essential cofactor for collagen synthesis, the body cannot produce new collagen without it. Vitamin C, along with zinc and copper, is required for the collagen triple helix structure to form properly.¹ Taking 500mg of vitamin C alongside collagen supports the body's ability to convert the peptides into usable collagen.
3. Wait at least an hour before dairy or magnesium
Both dairy and magnesium can interfere with collagen peptide absorption. If you take magnesium supplementation, which for migraineurs is a daily essential, taking it at a different time window from collagen (typically magnesium at night, collagen in the morning) avoids this competition entirely.
Several factors actively reduce both collagen absorption and the body's ability to produce collagen:
Sugar and refined carbohydrates are among the most damaging. If vitamins are added, they introduce dosing variables that can interact with the protocol's careful supplementation approach.
Glycine is a collagen-rich amino acid with direct neurological benefits. Collagen is naturally high in glycine, a conditionally essential amino acid with inhibitory neurotransmitter properties.
