Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte that governs fluid balance and helps water actually enter and stay in the tissues that need it. Research published in Nutrients confirmed that rehydration strategies combining water with adequate sodium are significantly more effective than plain water alone, particularly after exercise-induced fluid loss.²
2. Drink a full glass at a time, not a sip at a time
Sipping small amounts of water continuously throughout the day is less effective at restoring hydration than drinking a full glass at structured intervals. A full glass of water, ideally with a pinch of salt or an electrolyte supplement, empties from the stomach efficiently and is absorbed more completely than frequent small sips, which can pool in the stomach without being effectively processed.

Best Drinks for Dehydration
1. Water with electrolytes, the most effective option
Plain water rehydrates, but sodium-containing electrolyte drinks rehydrate faster and more completely. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that high-sodium drinks restored plasma volume significantly more effectively than plain water or lower-sodium carbohydrate drinks after exercise-induced dehydration.³ Sodium is the mechanism, it keeps fluid in circulation rather than allowing it to be excreted or pool ineffectively.
2. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS)
ORS formulations, originally developed for clinical use in managing diarrhea-related dehydration, combine sodium, potassium, and a small amount of glucose in specific ratios designed to maximize intestinal absorption. Coconut water is a natural source of potassium and electrolytes. It rehydrates better than plain water in mild dehydration scenarios. However, it is worth noting for migraineurs following a low-carbohydrate or carnivore approach that coconut water contains natural sugars and is relatively high in potassium.

What to avoid
Alcohol and caffeinated drinks promote fluid loss rather than restoring it and should not be relied on during active rehydration.¹ Fruit juices provide fluid but are high in natural sugars with little sodium, they are not an effective rehydration tool for the migraine brain and can spike blood glucose in ways that add metabolic instability rather than resolving it.
Sipping vs. Drinking a Full Glass
This distinction matters more than it might seem. Sipping water continuously throughout the day can feel adequate hydration but often is not particularly for rehydrating fast after a deficit. A full glass of water with sodium allows the osmotic gradient to work properly: sodium holds water in the extracellular space rather than allowing it to be excreted quickly through the kidneys. Sipping without electrolytes, by contrast, can dilute extracellular sodium over time without restoring cellular hydration effectively.
